Robert Smith dice que The Cure entrará al estudio a grabar nuevas canciones

The Cure están planeando celebrar con bombos y platillos sus 40 años de vida (en Julio de 2019 se cumplen cuatro décadas de su debut), y fuera del ya anunciado propio festival (Meltdown) donde serán anfitriones y que tendrá a grandes bandas y artistas del circuito indie y alternativo entre el 15 y 24 de junio en Londres, Smith dice que el mismo evento lo animó a descubrir una gran cantidad de música nueva, que se convirtió en una especie de «catalizador, porque de repente me enamoré de la idea de escribir nuevas canciones», comenta.

Hablando con Shaun Keaveny para la BBC (vía Pitchfork), Smith dice: «Curiosamente, hacer esta cosa de Meltdown en realidad me ha galvanizado y he reservado tiempo de estudio para la banda». Agrega que envió cartas manuscritas a todos los artistas invitados. «Mi lista corta original prácticamente se materializó», dice, aunque los Rolling Stones «cortésmente rechazaron» su petición irónica.

Smith también dice que la historia de The Cure pesó en cómo celebrar su 40 aniversario el 9 de julio de este año, provocando el lanzamiento de su primer y especial concierto del año. «¿Qué haremos?», dice «¿Volver a Crawley, donde todo comenzó? ¿Tocar en el pub donde hicimos nuestro primer show como The Cure? ¿O deberíamos ir a algo mega, hacer un show en cada ciudad capital del mundo?» Continúa, «es el 40 aniversario del primer álbum en 2019!».

Agrega que «idealmente» el show de Hyde Park contará con la nueva música en la que se está trabajando. «Algo de eso es bueno, algo de eso no es tan bueno», dice. «Nunca quise estar en una posición en la que me obligaba a escribir».

También anunció que encabezará la última noche respaldada por otros miembros de The Cure. En lugar de un conjunto tradicional, el espectáculo comprenderá «interpretaciones de canciones de The Cure» con «diferentes configuraciones de personas en el escenario», incluido el como solista.

La última grabación de The Cure llegó en forma de un cover para el tema de «Hello Goodbye» de The Beatles, que fue lanzada en un álbum tributo a Paul McCartney en 2014. Antes de eso, su producción de estudio más reciente llegó en su álbum de 2008, «4:13 Dream».
